Did Jesus pay tithing?

Read Dave’s answer

Answer 1

Yes. Tithing was a common and accepted practice among the Jews in Jesus’s day and for centuries, even millennia before. Tithes were used to support Priests and Levites, or bearers of the higher and lesser Priesthoods.

Jesus was a Rabbi, not a Priest or Levite, so if he had not tithed, the strict Pharisees would have surely mentioned it, as they did other practices of Jesus that were a departure from their dictates, which were often rooted in their erroneous interpretations of the scripture and the law, as Jesus noted in his teachings.

What’s more, Jesus was not a hypocrite, and mentions tithing in a way that demonstrates respect for the practice, several times in the Gospels.

It’s important to note, however, that Jesus may have only tithed before he left home at age 30 to begin his ministry. After he became dependent on the “kindness of strangers” as an itinerant Rabbi, he may have had no increase that required the payment of tithing. But if he did, you can be sure he paid tithing on it.
