Do you believe in God, and why?

Read Dave’s answer

Answer 1

Yes, I believe in God. I know he lives.

There is only one true God worthy of our faith, and countless false Gods that are not worth believing in, which give atheists plenty of cause for their disbelief.

Why do I believe in God?

Because I asked, as Jesus said I should, and God revealed himself to me in unmistakable ways.

Because I sought him, as Jesus said I should, and I found him in his marvelous works, along with countless reasons to support my hopes for eternal life.

Because I knocked on the door to the kingdom of God, as Jesus said I should, and God opened the gate to the narrow way that leads to eternal life and enfolded me in the arms of his love.

So I witness to all that God is real, and hears and answers prayers. He has heard and answered mine. He almost never answers as I would expect; he sometimes answers with silence while I struggle to make my heart right; but he often answers with his Holy Spirit and a consuming revelation of his love and grace, and he often enough answers with an undeniable miracle as God works in his mysterious ways with me and those I love. Faith precedes the miracle.

So at this point in my life, I could no more deny that God lives and loves us than I could deny that I am alive, but will someday die. This knowledge gives my life meaning; it brings me joy; and it leaves me grateful for every tender mercy and marvelous wonder I experience, day by day.

Yes, I believe in God, because he and his marvelous works are as real as real can be to me.

If you want to see yourself the way atheists see themselves (as best as I can tell from their responses here on Quora, they see themselves as more logical and reasonable than believers and less needy than believers), then you have a reason to not believe in God.

Atheists say they enjoy freedom from rigid rules of religion and morality.

Atheists say they enjoy freedom from the superstitions surrounding life after death.

If you want to enjoy the knowledge of the truth that Jesus promised would make you free, then you should believe in God.

Believers say they enjoy freedom from the consequences of sin.

Believers say they know they will live again and will see loved ones again.

I say you get to choose for yourself whichever of the two sets of beliefs brings you peace of mind and fulfillment and best reflects the world you want to live in.
